R.I.S.E. (Redefining Investment Strategy Education) is the largest student investment forum in the world and the first of its kind to bring leading students, faculty, and Wall Street together in an interactive learning environment to discuss a range of pertinent issues facing investment professionals. R.I.S.E. VIII included keynote presentations by a group of internationally renowned industry leaders, specialized breakout sessions, workshops, a career strategies forum, and an optional portfolio competition. Modeled after the World Economic Forum held annually in Davos, Switzerland, R.I.S.E. emphasizes interactive discussions.

Suzanne L. Duncan works at the IBM Institute for Business Value, where she is responsible for research and thought leadership for the financial markets industry. Ms. Duncan has presented her research at more than 30 conferences throughout the world and has won several awards at conferences. She is the author of several whitepapers and has appeared in more than 120 media outlets, including CNBC, Bloomberg, BBC, Fox, Financial Times, and Economist Magazine. Her whitepapers include “Get Global. Get Specialized. Or Get Out,” “The Trader is Dead, Long Live the Trader,” “Asset Managers Turn Up the Heat,” and “Capturing the Sell Side Upside.” Prior to joining IBM in October 2000, Ms. Duncan worked in the custody division of State Street Corporation and the investment management division of State Street Global Advisors. Previously she worked for Bank of America.
Matthew H. Scanlan, CFA, is managing director at Barclays Global Investors, where he serves as head of Americas Institutional Business. Prior to joining BGI in 1997, he was a senior portfolio manager at The Northern Trust Company in Chicago. Mr. Scanlan is chair of the Education Advisory Committee of CFA Institute and is a recent recipient of the CFA Institute C. Stewart Sheppard Award for contributions to the investment industry's body of knowledge. He also serves on the Board of Trustees for The Mechanics' Institute of San Francisco. Mr. Scanlan received his BA in economics from the University of Southern California and his MM in accounting and finance from the J.L. Kellogg School at Northwestern University.
Margaret E. Franklin, CFA, is a partner with KJ Harrison & Partners, a private client investment management firm located in Toronto. Previously, she was managing director of institutional asset management and was a member of the Executive Management Committee at Altamira Management. Ms. Franklin also worked with Barclays Global Investors Canada, with Mercer Investment Consulting, and with State Street Global. She is a member of the Board of Governors of CFA Institute and is the past president of the Toronto Society of Financial Analysts. Ms. Franklin graduated from McMaster University with a BA in economics.
Robert R. Johnson, CFA, is deputy CEO and managing director of the Education Division at CFA Institute. He also serves as the executive director of the Research Foundation of CFA Institute. Dr. Johnson’s writing has been published in more than 50 finance and economics journals, including Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Finance, Financial Analysts Journal, and Journal of Portfolio Management. He has been quoted in publications such as the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and Financial Times, and he has appeared on ABC World News, CNN, CNBC, Bloomberg TV, and other media. He is on the advisory boards of the Journal of Portfolio Management and the Journal of Wealth Management. Dr. Johnson earned a BSBA from the University of Nebraska-Omaha, an MBA from Creighton University, and a PhD from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
